How to Create a Personal Feng Shui Star Chart
It’s been called by several names, Energy Number, Kua Number, Person’s Destiny Number, Personal Life Number, Ming Gua. We will refer to it as MING GUA.
What can you find out by knowing your Personal GUA ? Ming Gua represents your personal Feng Shui number, based on your birth year. Feng Shui consultants (not all) use it to enhance/integrate the natal chart of a building, home or office. Ming Gua is used to determine a person’s resonant Trigram, Direction, Element and other properties and is used as activators in Natal Charts.
Separate formulas for Male and Female, there are also two ways of calculating each
Using the last 2 digits of the date ie 1998 ==> 9 + 8 = 17 ==> 1 + 7 =8 … deduct result from 10 leaves 2, so this males Gua number is 2.
After 2000 the formula changes slightly: Add last 2 digits of birth year, reduce to single digit; but instead of subtracting from 10 it’s 9….
Sample for male after 2000… 2015 = 1 + 5 = 6 => 9 – 6 = 3
Sample for male after 2000… 2005 = 0 + 5 = 5 => 9 – 5 = 4
Sample for male after 2000… 2012 = 1 + 2 = 3 => 9 – 3 = 6
For ladies before 2000, the formula is: Reduce last 2 digits of birth year to a single digit(same as men) and add 5. That’s it nice and neat.
Sample for female before 2000.. 1976 = 7 + 6 = 13 = 1+3 = 4 => 4 + 5 = 9
The ladies formula changes slightly after 2000, instead of adding 5 they add 6 for any birth date after 2000.
Sample for female after 2000.. 2019 = 1 + 9 = 10 = 1+0 =1 => 1 + 6 = 7
Let’s do another example for female after 2000…2021 = 2 + 1 = 3 => 3 + 6 = 9
Extra Rules:
1. Ming Gua cannot be 5, it reverts to 2 for men and 8 for Women.
2. If you’re birthday is between 1st and 3rd Feb, use the previous year to calculate your Gua as Chinese Solar year starts on Feb 4th +- one day.
There are separate formulas for Male and Female.
This is the “other” formula to determine a male’s personal Ming Gua, use formula below to calculate the ming gua of the men. Why are there different formulas for a male and female? Because yang (male) and yin (female) Chi tend to flow in opposing directions ( remember the +– and the -++). Each formula is determined by movement of Chi.
1. Add the digits in your birth year. As an example, let’s use a male born in 1954. ==> 1 + 9 + 5 + 4 = 19
2. Add the resulting number until you get a single-digit number. ==> 1 + 9 = 10; 1 + 0 = 1
3. Subtract the resulting number from 11. If the result is 10, add the digits until you get a single-digit number. ==> 11 – 1 = 10; 1 + 0 = 1
The resulting number is your ming gua, your natal or personal trigram, which is matched with a number from the Luoshu magic square. This example’s ming gua/trigram is Kan (1) , and his personal trigram. Note: If male personal ming gua/trigram is 5, use number 2 as your ming/trigram.
Let me explain again how to calculate the “Annual Star”
The formula is easy reduce any year to single digits and subtract the figure from 11 this will give you the “Annual Star Number” let’s try it for 1961:
We use the Chinese New Year (Solar) which falls on the 3rd Feb =- 1 day in Gregorian calendar. If your dates fall between these you need to check if you have to revert back 1 year
1 + 9 + 6 + 1 = 17 == 1 + 7 = 8 : Finally 11 – 8 = 3
So now we know the annual star number for 1961 is 3 . Each year the prevailing annual star/number will take its place in the central palace. See Star Chart 3 below.
The 9 flying stars each represent a variation of Ch’I, each star/number is in a different location at different points in time; similar to the way we can track the orbit of the earth around the sun and pinpoint it’s position at certain time.
The 9 stars are not static they change positions over time using the Lou Shu trail as orbital path. Simply put at given point in time (snap shot) one and only one star will be dominant and its essence (energy) will be in effect. Just like the earth orbiting the sun it takes a full year for each star to complete a full orbit, hence being called “Annual Stars”
Each Star has its own traits or energy , they also have:
1 Unique Trigram (except for 5 in the central palace)
1 Unique Number
1 Element
3 of the 24 Mountains
3 Sectors containing 1 of the 24 mountains
So when you are born, taking a snapshot would reveal what your Personal Star would be and essence.
As a sample lets go back to 1961 for a person born on 28th September:
Born on 28 09 1961 ===> Your Annual Birth Number is 3
Your Birth Star Number = 5
Your Ruling Mountain Sign is = 
Your Ruling Trigram = 
Your Ruling Element = 
Birth Star Number and Birth annual Star Number and the Target Date Star Number you selected to analyse
